Subway Introduces Flatbread Sandwiches

Today Subway has announced that, beginning next Monday, it will offer flatbread as an option for any of its existing sandwiches, and will also introduce two new sandwiches, Chicken Florentine and a Steak & Bacon Melt, made with flatbread.

In a departure from Subway's signature fresh-baked bread philosophy, the flatbread dough will be baked off premises, then supplied to Subway franchises and finished off in on-site ovens.

With this launch, Subway is attempting to make headway in a tight market that includes other chains such as Dunkin' Donuts and Quiznos, which both already carry flatbread sandwiches. Do you think Subway's new product will take off?

Starbucks to Do Smoothies, Subway to Do Coffee

With reality stars posing as fashion designers and singers turning into restaurateurs, it's no surprise that Starbucks and Subway would expand into something other than caffeinated beverages and sandwiches. Tomorrow Starbucks is scheduled to launch a new smoothie line. Called Vivanno Nourishing Blends, the smoothies come in two flavors: Orange Mango Banana and Chocolate Banana.

Scrambling to increase sales with innovative new products like smoothies, Starbucks has reason to worry: Subway is testing out a cafe concept. The Subway cafes will be larger than the existing sandwich shops with comfortable seating, wi-fi, espresso drinks, gelatos, and paninis. Subway isn't the first fast-food chain to expand into coffee, both McDonalds and Burger King have been heavily promoting coffee drinks.

Subway's New Green Line

Subway recently announced a commitment to make itself a little more green. The chain's first "eco-store" opened earlier this month in Kissimmee, Florida, and it includes many environmentally friendly lighting and heating methods, as well as recycled products and furnishings. They've worked in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for the eco-stores. The store will also give Subway a chance to measure energy and water savings against a regular Subway nearby.

In addition to the new eco-store, Subway also announced that it will now use paper napkins made from 100 percent recycled materials, and has switched the materials used in its cutlery and plastic drinking cups. These little replacements will save more than 610,000 pounds of resin and 13,000 barrels of oil per year.

All of these alterations, along with several other initiatives, are part of Subway's new eco-friendly policy. Here's more:

other restaurant chain, and more than 28,000 worldwide, we are in a

Subway to Introduce Personal Pizzas in June

Another weird news post for you. Looks like Subway is deciding to add a personal pan pizza to its menu. Yep, we're talking about Subway, the sandwich place. I'm a little confused about this one, being that I've never really considered pizzas to be healthy and Subway's sort of got this "we're healthy" mantra. However, according to BrandWeek, Subway will add deep-dish style personal pizzas to the menu of 13,000 locations.

An employee at a test store located in the East Village section of New York City said they only sold two pizzas the first day of the test in late March, but are now are up about 25 a day. The biggest problem: patrons don't know about the product despite a prominent sign on the menu board, he said.

We'll have to wait until this June to see if patrons in other parts of the country are more observant. That's when the Subway pizza train hits locations.

LL Cool J Helps Launch Subway's Fresh Fit Menu

You may have heard that Subway launched their new Fresh Fit menu the other day, but did you know that LL Cool J was involved? Apparently he and Jared (you know Subway Jared) were patrolling the streets of New York doing "Random Acts of Fitness." If they found you being healthy, then you would have received a $5 Subway gift card. And with that gift card you could have marched right down to your nearest Subway where you could have purchased one of their new creations.

The new menu has been designed to cater to today's increased health conscious society. The new adult combos will include low-fat 6" subs, Diet Coke/water/1% milk, and sliced apples/raisins/Baked Lays. The kid combo will be a 4" low-fat sub, 1% milk/apple juice and raisins/apples.
