While it's perfectly acceptable to love corn dogs as a kid, there are fewer opportunities to enjoy them as adults. Part of that has to do with the corn dog and its reputation, but we also feel guilty for taking something that's not all that healthy to begin with and deep-frying it on a stick.

Fortunately, one can shamelessly return to the good times of youth with this baked version, which uses smoked chicken sausage instead of the traditional beef frank. To get the recipe,

Nathan's Famous Dog Contest Ends in First Ever Dog Off

The excitement was incredible this morning at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition. The reigning champ Joey Chestnut and the Japanese firecracker Takeru Kobayashi faced off in a shorter — 10 instead of last year's 12 — minute competition to see who could eat the most hot dogs. For the first time in history, after the ten minutes, there was a tie: both Chestnut and Kobayshi, who eat at basically the same pace, had eaten 59 hot dogs.

What happened next was a dog off: whoever could eat five more hot dogs the quickest would win. Although it was neck and neck, Joey Chestnut was victorious and walked away with the coveted mustard belt. When ESPN asked why he had won, Chestnut remarked,

It's fourth ofJuly and you can get through something like this. It came down to who needed it more, he wanted it but I needed it.

Sausage and South Beach Diet Vending Machines?

Vending machines aren't exactly renowned for their variety, with choices pretty much limited to chips or candy and soda or water. But according to the Chicago Sun-Times, the National Automatic Merchandising Association held its vending-machine expo in Chicago last week, and there are plenty of cool, if slightly bizarre, developments on the vending-machine front.

Among the innovations mentioned in the article:

A new vending machine that dispenses grilled hot dogs and sausages "snuggled in soft, warm buns."
South Beach Diet vending machines that will sell healthy, diet-approved snacks, including sugar-free Jell-O, Wheat Thins, Crystal Light, and lunch wraps.
An Internet-connected machine that will let parents log on to limit the number of snacks their kids can buy.

Can you imagine trying to sneak a second bag of chips at lunch and being denied by parental controls? Geez. Still, my favorite has to be the hot dog machine. At first, it sounded gross, then I thought: If hot dogs from a cart are tasty, why not a vending machine? So tell me, would you eat a hot dog from a vending machine?

When I found out that today is Hot Dog Day, I knew I had to share this fun creation. It really takes "semi-homemade" and pushes it to the next level, everything can be bought, but the end result is completely unique. The Hot Dog and Fries Cake is a completely edible, ridiculously sweet cake shaped to look like a hot dog in a bun and french fries. All you need is a loaf cake, a few Twinkies, red frosting, yellow icing, red icing and some green fruit. If you'd rather not use Twinkies, substitute with different kind of cake in the center. Either way, your little ones — and big ones too — are going to love this treat.

Hot Doggity Dog - It's Hot Dog Day!

In honor of today being Hot Dog Day, here's a bit more info about America's beloved baseball standby. Hot dogs were created in Frankfurt, Germany — hence the name frankfurter — in 1852. In 1904 American sausage importer Antione Feuchtwanger sold his curved dogs in a bun. Originally he gave customers gloves to hold and eat the dogs but the gloves disappeared quickly, so he worked with a baker to develop a bread bun to hold the hot dogs.

Simply put, a hot dog is a type of sausage containing meat, meat fat, grain filler (bread crumbs, flour, etc), a little egg white, and spices (garlic, salt, pepper, etc). Almost all packaged hot dogs are pre-cooked and most are stuffed into synthetic collagen casings.

In 1893 the sausages became popular at baseball parks. Today, Americans consume over 16 billion dogs per year with each region and baseball stadium serving up a distinct style of dog.

Come Party With Me: Camping Trip - Menu (Part 2)

Yesterday I started planning the menu to a camping weekend in Yosemite. Instead of supplying the food for all the meals, ask guests to contribute. Have one couple bring sandwich fixings for Saturday's lunch. Have another bring Sunday's breakfast in the form of bagels, cream cheese, muffins, and fruit. For Saturday's dinner wrap salmon in foil and bake over the grill. Potatoes and onion packets cook the same way, wrapped tightly in foil. Cherry tomato skewers round out the menu.

A store bought fruit pie with whipped cream finishes the night on a sweet note. On Sunday before you pack up and drive off, serve guests a filling lunch of stuffed hot dogs. For these recipes

Lettuce Share Our Wieners

Oh hey guys, in case you didn't know, today is actually National Veggie Hot Dog Day. Wanna know how I know? I heard about the joint effort between PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and Playboy. That's right Playboy.

Playmates Lauren Anderson and Laura Guttridge posed as "Lettuce Ladies" in PETA's annual Capitol Hill veggie dog giveaway.

I don't know about this folks, the strategically placed lettuce is pretty sexist. I also don't understand how PETA and Playboy go hand in hand. I suppose I have a problem when we start caring more about animal rights and less about people. It's as if the entire feminist movement didn't happen.

What do you guys think of this publicity stunt? And more importantly, what do you think of veggie dogs?

Pizza Hut's "Double Roll" Is Blowing My Mind

Wow. Really that's all you need to say about Pizza Hut's "Double Roll" pizza - hot dog stuffed crust pizza with corn, mini- hamburger patties and a whole lot more. I really don't have much else to say except for that a medium costs ¥2500 ($20.50) and a large will set you back ¥3550 ($29). Oh and like most amazing things, it's only available in Japan. If anyone can translate the ad, please let us know what it says in the comments.

Update: The fine folks at Slice NY have pointed out that the ad has the date Sept 9, 2007 in it. Does this mean it's a limited edition pizza? Oh and what's stuffed into the right-hand side and why does it have a maple leaf instead of a tomato? Is it a sweet maple syrup sauce?!

Could You Eat One Hot Dog Every 10.9 Seconds?

Yesterday, at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, reigning champion Takeru Kobayashi was bested by Californian Joey Chestnut. In a down-to-the-wire race, Chestnut dethroned six-time champion Kobayashi by downing 66 hot dogs (plus buns) in 12 minutes - that's one hot dog every 10.9 seconds. Kobayashi, despite recently having a wisdom tooth extracted and treatment for a sore jaw - managed to do his personal best by inhaling 63 hot dogs.

However, the event wasn't without some controversy. At the final few minutes Chestnut was devouring hot dogs so quickly, the counter couldn't keep up and they had to actually go back and count all plates.

Most people have heard of Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs 4th of July competition - the one where Takeru Kobayashi shoves hot dogs in his mouth at lightening speeds - but did you realize that there are many different kinds of competitive eating contests? If you think shoving 59 hot dogs in your face is wild, how do you feel about pigs' feet and knuckles (the winner recently ate 2.89 pounds of the stuff) or gyoza (212 of them). In fact there are so many competitive eating contests that the folks at Senselist have actually put together a list of their favorite 16 competitive eating contests. Of those 16, my faves include:

59 1/2 Hot Dogs in 12 Minutes

Even if you're not a competitive eater enthusiast, I'm sure you've probably heard of Japanese champion Takeru Kobayashi. You've probably seen him on the news because he holds just about every record and award for competitive eating. I say just about every because this past weekend Kobayashi's record was smashed by 22 year-old Joe Chestnut of San Jose, California. During the Southwest Regional Hot Dog Eating Championship in Tempe, Arizona, Chestnut devoured 59 1/2 hot dogs (plus buns) in 12 minutes. The previous record of 53 3/4 was set by Kobayashi at last year's Nathan's 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York. At the same event, Chestnut actually came in second with 52 hot dogs. Something tells me that this means FACE OFF at this year's 4th of July event. Either way I'm flabbergasted, I just don't understand how anyone can pack away that many hot dogs.
