On today's date 38 years ago, the song "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies was the Number 1 hit in America. This being the Sugar Network, I thought it would be appropriate to provide you with a few fun facts about, yep you guessed it, sugar!

Some people believe that dry swallowing 1 teaspoon of sugar can cure the hiccups.
Sugar is 100% natural with no fat.
Sugar is one of the oldest cooking ingredients, dating back to 326 BC.
Sugar cane was introduced to the New World in 1493 by Christopher Columbus.
In 2001, scientists discovered sugar in outer space.

Sugar is the only taste that humans are born craving.
Before 1899, sugar was crudely sold from barrels. The sugar industry was revolutionized when it was first packed in cartons.
Sugar has many uses outside of the kitchen: it's one of the most important components of medicine, it's used to slow down the setting of cement, it plays a role in leather tanning and paper dying, and prolongs the life of fresh cut flowers.

I love bananas so much that I have one every work day at 11:30am. If you love bananas as much as I do, then you'll be excited to know that today is National Banana Lover's Day! To celebrate, I've put together a few fun facts about bananas:

The banana plant is not a tree. It's actually the world's largest herb!
A banana plant may grow up to 30 feet in length with stems weighing up to 100 pounds.
Bananas are native to Malaysia, and have been in existence for over 1 million years.
Bananas were once considered a very exotic, hard to find fruit.
Bananas were first sold in the United States in 1876 at the 100th anniversary party of the Declaration of Independence in Pennsylvania. They were wrapped in foil and cost only 10 cents.
Today bananas are grown in 132 countries across the globe.
The average person eats 33 pounds of bananas a year!

Well hello May!
In case you were wondering which month is the glorified National Egg Month, I've got the answer! Why it's May! So why is it May and not say, April (when most eggs are sold in America thanks to the Easter season)? Well apparently, after Easter the demand for eggs goes down, but the supply is still high, so beginning in May eggs are usually cheaper than they are the rest of the year.

In order to celebrate National Egg Month, I thought I'd give you a few fun egg related items to chew over...

I'll start things off with this delightful Timey Egg Timer. I mean, come on, his name is "Timey" and he's an egg, with a beak (so it's like a chicken), isn't he adorable? I hope that nobody minds my tiny obsession with useless knowledge concerning statistics and facts about food and holidays. Boy is it my lucky week: two holidays = two lists of fun facts... Woo-hoo! I am jumping for joy at my desk right now.
