Jack in the Box has announced its plan to jump on the fast-food breakfast bandwagon with its new Breakfast Bowl, an entire, portable meal. A mix of eggs, hash browns, cheese, peppers, and meat, the dish is a "Sunday brunchworthy meal" to be "enjoyed on a weekday schedule." Jack in the Box hopes to satisfy consumers' need for a hearty breakfast on the go.

Of the fast-food giants, currently McDonald's has the highest amount of breakfast sales. Only time will tell if Jack in the Box's Breakfast Bowls will become as popular as the Egg McMuffin. One of my favorite SF brunch spots, Foreign Cinema, has a balsamic egg dish I've always wanted to recreate at home. Deglazing the fried egg in vinegar gives it a gentle saltiness that tastes gourmet and — I must admit — is highly suitable for hangovers. But instead of serving it with potatoes and greens like the restaurant does, I put a twist on the egg dish by making it into a sandwich.

As I suspected, the flavors were easy to reproduce on my own plate with some balsamic-reduction sauce, hearty multigrain bread, and mixed greens. I made two versions of the sandwich: one open-face with greens, and one closed-face with serrano ham. A little while back, YumSugar tasted and reviewed Batter Blaster, the pancake batter in a bottle. While she used the squirt-able batter to make surprisingly good-tasting pancakes, our friends at Grocery Eats recently used their batter blaster to make deep-fried pancakes. At first glance, these crispy pancakes look like delicious funnel cakes. But reading the fine print, one can see they are incredibly oily. The other day, a friend asked me what were the standard proportions for making a mimosa. While I pour mine with 3/4 Champagne and 1/4 orange juice, I wasn't sure if that was the normal ratio. Normally when I watch Top Chef, I imagine eating the dishes, but never think about making them. The Ultimate Eggs Benedict

Maybe I should check my horoscope because I feel like it's my lucky week. Last Thursday it was National Grilled Cheese Day (my all-time favorite simple sandwich) and today is National Eggs Benedict Day (my all-time favorite brunch dish)! Although I would love to tell you exactly how this delicious poached egg masterpiece received its name, I can't because the exact origins of the dish remain unclear. I will confess that I've never made homemade Eggs Benedict. Well not completely, I know how to make a perfect poached egg but I usually use store bought Hollandaise Sauce (I hate to admit that!). For some strange unknown reason I am afraid to make this mixture of egg yolk, lemon juice, and butter sauce. Since it's National Eggs Benedict Day, perhaps I'll give it a try. The other day geeksugar was telling me how her mom had just dropped off a delicious batch of fresh hot cross buns as part of her family's annual Easter celebration. Later that afternoon, I realized that today, Good Friday (which is known within the Christian religion as the Day of the Cross and is always the Friday before Easter), is actually National Hot Cross Buns day. Hot cross buns take their name from the cross (they can be made several ways: with pastry cream, flour/water, glazed rice paper, or cuts made into the dough before heating) that sits on top of the yeast buns. Easter is this Sunday and you know what that means, everyone is scrambling around prepping for family brunches, lunches, and dinners.
