Nancy Silverton's Fancy-Pants Sandwich Cookbook

How you feel about Nancy Silverton's Sandwich Book depends on how you feel about sandwiches. If you see sammies as a fast dinner option on a busy night, then this is not the book for you. But if you prefer to elevate your humble sandwich with gourmet ingredients, then you should give Silverton's book a shot. As she writes in the intro, "Don't look at them as complicated sandwiches, but as satisfying entrees on bread."

This cookbook grew out of the Thursday sandwich nights at LA restaurant Campanile, where different twists on classics like the grilled cheese are showcased every week. The 100-plus recipes are divided into eight categories, some more sandwichy than others. For a detailed breakdown,

Rachael Ray Parody Hits Shelves Sept. 3

Celebrity chef and media mogul Rachael Ray may be penning a poignant memoir, but a sarcastic someone is about to beat the star to the punch in publishing a book about herself. Every Freaking Day! With Rachell Ray by Elizabeth Hilts ($12.99) will parody the media mogul's monthly magazine, Every Day With Rachael Ray.

The 64-page book is full of saucy lines, such as, "Hey kids! If 30-minute meals are good, wouldn't 30-second meals be even better?"

The guide, "Rachell," played by a model who is a dead ringer for Ray, provides "super-caffeinated" commentary along with recipes. Hilts, a bestselling author, explained:

She's very easy to parody. She has a lot of very recognizable mannerisms: talking with her hands, singing to the food, referring to food as an almost-human entity.

What does the real Ray think of the parody? According to her publicist, she hasn't seen it yet. No doubt come September, we'll be checking this out. Do you think this book will fly off shelves to Rachael fans and foes alike?

Source

I'm not talking about cookbooks, but the nonfiction, narrative works that, when done well, can read like novels.

The Guide to the Chocolate Guide

Just in time for chocolate month, the folks at TasteTV have released The Chocolate Guide, a book on local chocolatiers, chocolate makers, chocolate shops, and more. This edition covers the West Coast — it says it covers California, Utah, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia; however, I found it to be really California-centric — and gives you descriptions and photos of each place. It's a pretty comprehensive guide — to California anyway — and would make for a fun chocolate road-trip tour guide. However, as much as I love drooling over chocolate, I found it to be somewhat frustrating. To see my thoughts on the book,

Do You Care If Robert Irvine Embellished His Résumé?

You may have heard but over the last several days, there's been a bit of a hub-bub over Robert Irvine's résumé. Looks like he might not have done the things he said he did, nor made the things he said he made, such as the wedding cake for Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Seems like he may have embellished just a tad bit. I wonder what this means for Irvine's career. After all, we all know what Food Network thinks of embellished résumés — anyone remember Jag? In fact, if you try to find Irvine's profile on their website you get an error instead of info (although the Google cache currently has the original one).

Given all the weird facts, embellishments and errors, what I want to know is does any of this affect the way you think of him?

Source

Although he's written several tomes, this one is a lifestyle guide that teaches you how to create an inviting home, entertain stylishly, and travel comfortably. The book is filled with tons of recipes and pictures of Colin's actual homes. A spectacular host, Colin goes above and beyond to make his guests feel welcome.

Some of his fabulous tips include secretly pulling back the covers to a houseguest's bed and always keeping puff pastry sausage rolls in the freezer for any impromptu events. He suggests serving South African and Australian wines because they are wonderfully affordable. Not into hosting parties? This book makes a great hostess gift.

The Sneaky Chef Makes a Comeback

By now, you've probably heard about Missy Chase Lapine — aka The Sneaky Chef — and her war with the Seinfelds, but did you know that the author of the popular children's cookbook has two other books in the works?

The first sequel, Sneaky Chef: How to Cheat on Your Man (In the Kitchen!), comes out this Spring and will feature recipes that cater towards sneaking healthy food into "man food." It includes recipes like "Macho Meatballs," "Love Me Tenderloin," and "Champion Chili."

Apparently all the publicity — or pending lawsuit — with the Seinfelds isn't hurting Lapine any. Her publisher has just announced a deal for a third book. The third volume has yet to be titled and will feature family-friendly recipes that hide healthy ingredients inside.

So what I want to know is, do you think we'll see Jessica Seinfeld's Deliciously Deceptive Food For Your Man?

Make Room For the Top Chef Cookbook

If you're one of those folks who can't get enough of Top Chef, you'll be thrilled to hear that Bravo Media is teaming up with Chronicle Books to release Top Chef: The Cookbook ($29.95). The hardcover tome is 256 pages long and features 100 recipes from the first three seasons, including Elimination and Quick-Fire challenges. There have been some pretty tasty-looking recipes, but I want to know, will it include Mikey from Season Two's weird Cheeto/Snickers concoction?

In addition to the recipes, the book will contain in-depth interviews with contestants and judges; discussion with the crew revealing the inner-workings of the show; photos from behind the scenes; and more. The foreword is not surprisingly written by head judge Tom Colicchio.

If you're excited, you're going to have to calm yourself for a while, the cookbook doesn't hit shelves until this Spring.

Source

Everyone knows at least one — they may be a closet fiend, but they're on your list — and luckily, they're easy to shop for. You could rush out and buy them a box of generic sweets, but why stop there? Why not put a little thought behind your gift? No time? Well, no worries, I've rounded up a bunch of gifts that would be perfect for the chocoholic in your life. You could test their knowledge with Chocolate Smarts, a set of 60 cards with facts, tips, and chocolate techniques. Or, if you'd rather satiate their sweet tooth, surprise them with Hotel Chocolat's Cool Yule Goody Bag or a set of Theo's 3400 Phinney Bars. Looking for more? Scroll through for several other chocoholic gift options.

YumSugar Gift Guide: Veggies on the Brain

Unless you are a vegetarian — or are downright savvy — cooking for one can sometimes be a daunting task. You have to remember to read all the ingredients, as even the tiniest bits are no-no. However, unlike cooking up vegetarian food, cooking up vegetarian foodie gifts is actually a snap. There are tons of great books out there, and lots of interesting finds. Mark Bittman, aka The Minimalist, has just released a vegetarian version of his classic tome How to Cook Everything. His recipes are straightforward and practical and his tone is wonderful.

If your vegetarian is more of an eater than a cooker, hunt down this Please Don't Eat Me, I Love You shirt. It's available in ten different colors and will look great on anyone.

For other great vegetarian gift ideas, including a soy milk maker, scroll through below.

YumSugar Gift Guide: Books for Cooks

My sister is a big reader — she always seems to have her nose shoved into a book — that is starting to develop a larger interest in cooking. That's why this year I'm thinking about getting her one of the many wonderful cookbooks and memoirs that have recently hit the shelves. If you've got a reader in your family — or someone who just loves cookbooks — take note, there are some great gifts to be found. One of my top choices is Cooking by James Peterson; it is an impressive tome with over 1500 color photos and is a fantastic reference for any cook. However, if your bookworm is more book and less cook, you may want to try The Amateur Gourmet, a charming book that's difficult to put down. Scroll through for more gift ideas, including one for a Deluxe Cookbook Holder.

If you're the kind of person who likes to snack on a Twinkie every now and again, I'm sorry to say you may want to rethink that snack. Steve Ettlinger, the author of Twinkie, Deconstructed states that there are 39 ingredients in a Twinkie, and all but one are processed. The list, which includes cellulose gum, calcium sulfate and polysorbate 60 are used in sheetrock, shampoo, laundry detergent and even rocket fuel.

It took Ettlinger over five years to track down the source of every ingredient found in a Twinkie. Along the way he discovered that the vitamins, artificial flavors and colorings come from petroleum and sorbic acid is made from natural gas.

When asked about the findings, the folks at Hostess said:

"Deconstructing the Twinkie is like trying to deconstruct the universe. We think the millions of people would agree that Twinkies just taste great."

Oh and one other thing that blew my mind — although really I should've realized this — the creamy middle? According to Ettlinger, that's mostly Crisco shortening.

And while all of this sounds terrible, I'd like to add that these ingredients aren't just found in Twinkies. Many other processed foods contain the same ingredients. Makes you think twice about what you eat, no?

Thanks to GiggleSugar for sending this info on to me!

Summer Reading: Cocktail Parties With A Twist

I have a large collection of colorful party planning books that I browse when I'm in need of inspiration. Cocktail Parties With A Twist by Alexandra and Elliot Angle is part of said collection. Written by the owners of top LA catering company, Aqua Vitae, the book features ideas for 14 parties complete with extensive cocktail coverage and deliciously paired recipes. They teach you how to host a party in a teeny studio, a cold garage, a local restaurant, a snowy mountain top, and a seaside dock. The pictures are gorgeous and the ideas innovative. My favorite party is the day after party in which they provide recipes and cocktails that will ease the pain of a hangover. Thanks to this book, I enjoyed many successful parties!

Summer Reading: The River Cottage Meat Book

It's no secret, I'm a pretty die-hard carnivore. I tried to go veg when I was 16, but my dad made bacon for breakfast a few days later and I just couldn't help myself. So naturally, when a book with the huge letters M-E-A-T arrived at the Sugar HQ, I knew I'd found my next "must read."

Just by glancing through Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's The River Cottage Meat Book, you can tell it's one of those books that is destined to become a classic. The first section of the book is committed to "Understanding Meat," while the rest of it is devoted to various ways of cooking. It's one part meat manifesto, one part guidebook and all parts captivating. Reading it will help you understand high-quality sustainable meat production, as well as educate you in how to choose and store meats. In fact, I lent the book to TeamSugar and she said,

If you are a meat eater it is a must, as it is an in-depth look into the delicious world of meat. For those vegetarians, the first chapter alone might convince you to eat a big juicy steak.

While it may not actually convert any vegetarians, it is a book that many vegetarians can get behind due to Hugh's stance of sustainable farming. If the poor treatment of animals wasn't enough to turn you off of big-farm farming, then Hugh's descriptions of slow-grown heritage animals treated with respect just might.

Yet, admittedly, this book is not for the faint of heart. For every delicious dish that's prepared, there's also pictures of it during the different stages of preparation (including the slaughter). However if you've ever wanted to learn more about meat, where it comes from, how you should select it and then prepare it, you should definitely seek this book out. It was originally published in the UK in 2004, but has recently been revised/converted for an American audience. And did I mention the fact that there are definitely loads of delicious recipes inside?

Summer Reading: Sweet Revenge

As much as I love reading a cookbook, I often enjoy reading novels about chefs, caterers, or culinary personas that have exciting adventures and delicious romances. Whenever I crave one of these culinary novels, I turn to Diane Mott Davidson, author of 14 foodie mysteries. In her latest novel, Sweet Revenge, her recurring heroine Goldy Schultz — a Nancy Drew meets Martha Stewart character — finds herself in the middle of yet another murder mystery. You'll be sitting on the edge of your seat, hungry for each page.

Davidson's prose is delectably descriptive and she even provides a recipe or two for some of Goldy's delicious dishes. However the real bonus is that Davidson doesn't take herself too seriously — she even names her characters after famous dishes (ex. Drew Wellington) — which makes for a refreshing and fabulous read.

A few weeks ago I asked you to share your favorite cookbook with the rest of us. For PartySugar it's Williams-Sonoma's The Bar Guide by Ray Foley. For me it's Baking Illustrated by the editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine. There were so many great entries (over 20!) and only one duplicate. These books look fascinating and I can't wait to try out some of them. Thanks to everyone who submitted their book!

Entry #1
LA's Sarah Kushner wanted to share Nigella's <a href="http://teamsugar.com/
Radarkitty from Livermore, CA wanted to share the book Sweet Gratitude. She choose it because it's all about baking desserts and is a fun illustrated read.

She believes there's a lot of great variety, including hearty and unique vegetarian meals that omnivores will love too!
Portland based LovaAJN couldn't choose a cookbook, so instead she's decided to take a picture with her favorite pink binder. This binder holds her most cherished recipes, including ones passed down to her from her mom.

Summer Reading: Cooking With Curtis

Many of you have written in and asked my opinion of Curtis Stone, aka The Take Home Chef. Truth be told, I don't know too much about him, other than he started at Melbourne's Savoy Hotel at the age of 18, and then later moved on to The Grill Room with Marco Pierre White (Godon Ramsay's mentor/nemesis). I also know that he's the author of a beautiful book called Cooking with Curtis: Easy, Everyday and Adventurous Recipes for the Home Cook.

The book is divided into four seasonal chapters, as well as three difficulty levels, and is full of mouth-watering dishes like Deep-Fried Eggplant and Mozzarella with Basil, Lentil Stew with Spicy Sausage and Crispy Pork Belly. It is clear that Stone's mission is to celebrate fresh seasonal ingredients and to get you, the home cook, interested in exploring the possibilities. There are plenty of tips and each recipe has a gorgeous photo to accompany it.

To get a taste of what the book has to offer — aka the recipe for Deep-Fried Eggplant and Mozzarella with Basil —

Summer Reading: Fanny At Chez Panisse

With the tremendous success of the foodie movie, Ratatouille, kids may be disappointed by a cookbook that dumbs down cooking with vegetable faces and cookie cutter shaped sandwiches.

However Alice Waters' children's cookbook is written from the point of view of her daughter Fanny. Fanny At Chez Panisse is the perfect tome for a child who has shown interest in the culinary world. The book begins with Fanny describing her mother's world inside the famed kitchen at Berkeley's Chez Panisse and includes the people who are a part of the daily workings of a restaurant. Later Fanny provides recipes to 46 of her favorite dishes ranging from peach crisp to roast chicken with herbs to garlic mayonnaise — all of which are delicious enough to be enjoyed by both children and parents alike. If you know a child who is interested in learning more about food, think about giving them this delicious book.

Summer Reading: Salt: A World History

Now that you've got the 411 on the history of sugar, I thought I'd introduce you to the history of salt. In addition to being a vehicle for how salt is harvested through the ages, Mark Kurlansky's Salt: A World History, is also a history of how salt is linked to culture, food prep and government. Most of us take salt for granted, but in the past it was certainly crucial to survival. It allowed people to preserve food for consumption during the long winter months, and was so valuable it actually acted as currency.

Overall it is a well researched book, sprinkled with amusing anecdotes and fascinating tidbits. If you're interested in food, it's definitely worth the read.

Summer Reading: Vino Italiano

A cross between a dictionary and a coffee table book, this reference guide, Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines Of Italy, is an excellent addition to any wine lover's collection. Written by Mario Batali's business partner, Joseph Bastianich & co author David Lynch, the book introduces each region of Italy detailing not only the wine, but significant wineries, recent successful vintages, and delicious native recipes. The authors write in a highly personal manner making this book as much about wine commentary as it is about living an authentic Italian lifestyle. It also advocates eating and drinking locally, claiming that the best regional wines pair with traditional dishes from that specific region. If you love wine, or have a passion for Italy, this comprehensive book is highly recommended reading.

Summer Reading: Sweets: A History of Candy

This week's candy explosion made me realize it was high time I told you about a book I received a few years ago. My pal Jeff knew I had a thing for candy, and so he presented me with Tim Richardson's Sweets: A History of Candy.

In what can only be called an extraordinary view of candy through the ages, Richardson opens the doors to candy's sordid history. Along the way we look at various cultures, what they eat and why. While it is definitely an engaging read, I must warn you that it is not a recipe book, nor is it a coffee table book, it is most certainly a history book. In fact, some of the passages even read like text books, with lengthy descriptions and lots of intricate details. However, if you are interested in candy, sweets, world culture or anthropology, this book is certainly a fascinating read.

We're talking about our favorite cookbooks, our favorite books about food, and books that just make us think of food. I don't know about you, but we have books in our collection that we just can't live without. For me it's Baking Illustrated by the editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine. For PartySugar it's Williams-Sonoma's The Bar Guide by Ray Foley.
To be included in the roundup, notify me via email (yumsugar@gmail.com) or PM by August 24 with the following information:

Summer Reading: Garlic and Sapphires

Before Ruth Reichl was the editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine, she held a six year stint as the restaurant critic for the New York Times. That period of her life is detailed in her third memoir, Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, which is a fun and enjoyable read. Reichl had what some considered to be the best gig in town, but instead of just allowing herself to be wined and dined, she took her job quite seriously and would often create elaborate disguises to ensure anonymity. Her disguises often included wigs, makeup, thiftstore duds, glasses and even credit cards in other names. Sometimes she was Brenda, an auburn aging hippie, other times she was Chloe, a blonde divorcée. Her writing is hilarious and refreshing, and always mouth-watering — you'll put the book down only to realize your belly is fully rumbilng.

If you'd rather know a bit more about Reichl, you can always begin with Tender at the Bone or Comfort Me with Apples.

Summer Reading: The Great American Camping Cookbook

I love cookbooks that provide provocative recipes as well as interesting information. In The Great American Camping Cookbook, Scott Cookman — funny last name for a cookbook author, right? — teaches you how to make cornmeal blueberry biscuits while giving you a history lesson on traditional American camp food. He encourages you to embrace outdoor cooking over an open fire via classic recipes like campfire potatoes, pan-fried trout, and bean soup. He also lists important staples, most forgotten ingredients, and warming cocktail recipes. If you are an avid camper who enjoys cooking, be sure to check out Cookman's book.

Summer Reading: Something Delicious This Way Comes

A few years ago my friends Niki and Leon hosted a delicious dinner at their home. Instead of slaving over the kitchen themselves, they decided to hire a "touring chef."

As a former punk/hardcore rocker, chef Joshua Ploeg was familiar with the ways of the road. However instead of touring with his band he's now touring with his knives and has been taking his tasty treats on the road since 1998 — winning over audiences one dish at a time. His specialty is dinner parties, but he also does demos and classes. If you've ever wanted to host a memorable dinner party — and it really doesn't get much more memorable than a touring former hardcore punk rocker turned vegetarian chef catering a full dinner in your home — then look him up and see if he's headed to a town near you.

He does primarily tasty vegan treats, however he has been known to dabble in butter and can prepare full vegetarian meals as well. If you think a vegetarian dinner can't be fantastic, I'll put an end to your cynicism by saying that it was absolutely wonderful — in fact two non-vegetable eating pals also loved the meal.

If he's not headed to a town near you, you can bring his ideas home instead. Over the last few years, Ploeg has self-published several vegan cookbooks including Something Delicious This Way Comes and Twelve Knights In My Kingdom, which contain things like anise tea cookies, breaded eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, ginger stick salad, and a delectable fried orange bread with coconut relish and orange sugar.

Summer Reading: Under The Tuscan Sun

Under The Tuscan Sun is a wonderfully written book that beautifully illustrates author Frances Mayes' love for Tuscany. In it she describes the experiences, mishaps, and adventures that occur when she purchases and renovates a house in Italy. Much of the prose is full of such detailed and lush food descriptions that I wanted to buy a plane ticket to Tuscany. Included are recipes to many authentic, Italian dishes, such as chicken with basil and a lemon/peach tart with mascarpone. The book is a bit like going on an Italian vacation and it's not much like the movie, so if you haven't read it check it out.

Also it's worth noting that Mayes currently produces an artisan olive oil made from hand-picked olives from her villa and named for her house Bramasole.

Summer Reading: Milk Eggs Vodka

I don't know about you guys, but I love making lists - mostly so I can cross things off of them. One of my favorite lists to whip up is a grocery list. Milk. Eggs. Butter. Candy. More Candy.

When I'm done with the list, I usually just toss it out in the recycling. However one or two may have accidentally been left in the shopping cart. Luckily for author Bill Keaggy, I'm not the only one who ever left a shopping list behind. In his new book Milk Eggs Vodka: Grocery Lists Lost and Found Keaggy has compiled hundreds of found shopping lists for your viewing enjoyment. The book, which is divided into 20 different types of lists (just plain funny, "badd spellrs", organized lists, etc.) is a fun look into other people's lives and will make for a great coffee table book or gift.

And if an entire book full of other people's shopping lists wasn't enough for you, then be sure to check out his website, grocerylists.org. There's over 1500 lists to choose from. I chose the one on the right because of the line "Bubble Gum if Alexis is good."

Summer Reading: The Man Who Ate Everything

Jeffrey Steingarten is my absolute favorite food journalist. He was an extremely successful lawyer before he switched careers and found his foodie calling. You may recognize his name from the judging table on Food Network's Iron Chef America, or the glossy pages of Vogue magazine. His witty, engaging articles about everything from the perfect egg to Spanish ham to the production of apple brandy are interesting, informative, and friendly. I hate to admit it, but I look forward to his stories each month more than I do the fashion ads! If you're not an avid Vogue reader, I highly recommend reading his first book, The Man Who Ate Everything, which is a collection of his Vogue essays. His detailed descriptions of food, combined with his actual attempts to create culinary masterpieces in his own kitchen, make for a fun and engaging read.

Summer Reading: The Gastronomical Me

The genre of food-based autobiographies might not exist if it wasn't for MFK Fisher. In 1932 MFK (Mary Frances Kennedy) was inspired by an Elizabethan cookbook and set out writing essays about her own cooking. At the urging of a friend (who later became her second husband), she published her first book, Serve it Forth, in 1937. It was well received and unlike other women writers, many critics assumed it was written by a man.

Once her first tome was published, her career as a food-writer began. During her life she wrote over 20 books and essays, most of which are primarily about food, food prep, history and culture.

When I first became interested in the world of food, everyone highly recommended books by MFK Fisher. Her prose moves so smoothly and her ability to spin tales about food, travel and life is often considered unmatched. So whether you begin with Serve it Forth, her classic The Art of Eating, or her autobiography The Gastronomical Me, you should really take time out of your busy schedule to savor as many of her words as you can.

Summer Reading: Barefoot Contessa Parties!

My favorite show on Food Network is Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa. I've made at least one recipe from every episode and all of the best shows are saved on my Tivo. I love her gay best friend/florist Michael and her bubbly, dorky husband Jeffrey. Her relaxed, yet elegant nature and simple, yet delicious menus remind me of my beloved grandma. Her recipes, which at times can be old fashioned, always highlight the pure flavor of the ingredients. Naturally, I have her Barefoot Contessa Parties! book. The title of the book has a little exclamation point that perfectly demonstrates both Ina and my point of view: parties should always be fabulous! The grilled salmon sandwiches, caesar salad with pancetta, and sour cream coffee cake are recipes that I use and make regularly. The coffee cake is wonderful to bring as a hostess gift, make for a depressed friend, or take to a potluck brunch. To look at the recipe from this amazing book,

Summer Reading: Small-Batch Baking

Have you ever desired to bake some lovely homemade treats, only you didn't because you only wanted a few bites of cake, or few cookies. Didn't you wish there was a way to bake exactly what you wanted? Well, author Debby Maugans Nakos knows exactly how you feel. That's why she's created Small-Batch Baking, an entire cookbook full of recipes that yield just enough for one or two servings. She's even come up with an ingenious way to bake a two layer cake using clean cans. While I love the concept in theory, I did have a problem with the use of egg substitute. Everything is measured out exactly, that you're often measuring out 1/2 of an egg, etc. Also, some of the editing is a little sloppy - ingredients listed on the same line instead of separate ones. I've used a few of the cookie recipes, but found the flavors to be so-so, I'd rather make a large batch of my favorite dough and freeze the rest to bake for later. However, the cake recipes are quite ingenious as sometimes you do just need a little cake. If you've ever wanted just one or two bites of something, then it's definitely worth checking out.

For the recipe to Debby's mini chocolate cake,

Summer Reading: The Wine Club

Lately I've been encouraging my grandfather and his lady friend to start a wine club. I love wine clubs because they are a great way to get friends together while learning about wine. When I first got into wine I tried reading stuffy books full of information on wine varietals, grape types, and climate conditions. These reads were too textbooky, which is why I enjoyed Maureen Christian Petrosky's The Wine Club - a book that's packed with knowledge without all of the stuffiness. Each chapter is labeled by months of the year, with one type of wine for each month. Within each section are fun facts about the wine, bottles at different price points, and tasty recipes. Petrosky writes in a female-friendly, snob-free tone and the text is in purple and green print (like the color of grapes!) instead of the standard black. Get this book and host your first wine club party!

Summer Reading: Candyfreak

"The author has eaten a piece of candy every single day of his entire life."

I could tell from the first sentence in Steve Almond's love letter to candy, CandyFreak: A Journey through the Chocolate Underbelly of America, that I had found a book that would really speak to me. As someone who also has a huge weakness for candy, I was excited to read the riveting romp in search of unique and under-represented candy bars. The often hilarious Almond - who has an incredible name for someone who is a self-proclaimed Candyfreak - travels across America in search of regional candy. For example, did you know that Idaho is the home to a candy called Idaho Spud and that it's nearly impossible to find Valomilk bars west of the Rockies? While not completely flawless - he does get a little preachy regarding mainstream chocolate manufacturers - Candyfreak is definitely a delicious read. After each chapter, I found myself scouring the aisles of unnamed convenience stores looking for these hard-to-find treats. I had to have Sky Bars and Big Hunks and everything in between. If you're not interested in developing a severe candy habit, then I suggest you steer clear. However if you really want to know what an Idaho Spud is, or how a Clark Bar is manufactured (or even what a Clark Bar is), then definitely check it out. But don't say I didn't warn you, after reading this book you will definitely develop a severe candy habit.

Summer Reading: The New Basics

When I was trying to determine which cookbook was my favorite - for our current summer reading challenge - The New Basics by Sheila Lukins & Julee Russo, came in at a close second. What I love about this cookbook is that it covers everything from appetizers and cocktails to sauces and desserts. This cookbook lives at my vacation house so I make dishes there while relaxing at the cabin - except for the few that I have memorized such as tasty chicken, bacon, and avocado sandwich or the classic mustard vinaigrette.

The New Basics is such a complete and reliable source for recipes that I never have to pack my cookbooks or recipe folders. In summer, I make the key lime pie and in winter I make the cheese and beer soup. Usually I prefer cookbooks with lots of colorful images, but the blank pages and black and white illustrations are oddly comforting. If you are looking for a cookbook that basically covers everything, I suggest checking this out!

Summer Reading: On Food and Cooking

When I told YumJimmy that we were spotlighting a new book every day in August, he told me to make sure that I mentioned Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen. When it was first published over 20 years ago, it instantly became a success. Many people even consider it to be like an encyclopedia. The classic publication was recently revised and updated - in fact almost every page was rewritten - and the result is a fascinating read. It's another book that will help you learn how to cook, as opposed to just being able to regurgitate recipes. If you're looking for lovely prose and a effortless read, this isn't the tome for you, but if you're looking for something that will really help you take your cooking to the next level then I highly recommend it. It's a must for any culinary student, but I think anyone interested in the why and how will find it fascinating as well.

Summer Reading: Be My Guest

When I first started hosting parties back in 2002, the glossy themed party planning book, Be My Guest: Theme Party Savoir-Faire by Rena Sindi was on my Christmas list. Luckily my mom always shops by my lists and on December 25th the shiny new book full of fabulous ideas was waiting for me under the tree. In the book, Rena invites readers to come party with her as she chronicles 14 of New York's high society themed parties - ones that she actually staged and planned herself. Not only are the photos of socialites - yes, that is a pre-famous Paris Hilton on the cover - and celebrities gorgeous to look at, but Sindi has plenty of amazing ideas. Similar to my party plans, she provides the details on all the major pieces of a theme party: the dress, invitations, venue, decor, menu, drinks, entertainment, and music. The food recipes - caviar on potato crisps with creme fraiche or goat cheese bundles with spring salad and yellow lentil vinaigrette - are not for novice cooks, but the cocktail recipes - white chocolate martinis or strawberry mojitos - are varied and exciting. Her musical selections are easy to enjoy and pair perfectly with each theme. This book has honestly inspired my career as a party planner!

Have you had a chance to flip through the pages? If so, what did you think?

Summer Reading: The Omnivore's Dilemma

The Omnivore's Dilemma was one of last year's most talked about food books and yet it didn't have a single recipe in it. In fact, it didn't have any kitchen tips either. So what was it about and what made it so popular?

Author Michael Pollan uses his tome as a way to explore the way we deal with food, or actually, the way we don't deal with food. As he travels up and down the food chain, it is obvious that he clearly believes our society has become greatly distanced from our food. The meat we purchase in the grocery store is shaped like a slab, not an animal. His disgust at the factory farming industry is very clear and his words are sometimes frightening to digest. Whether you're a full-fledged meat eater or a long-time vegetarian, The Ominvore's Dilemma will definitely make you think twice about how you consume food.

Have any of you read it? If so, what did you think?

Summer Reading: French Women for All Seasons

Remember back in 2005 when everyone was reading French Women Don't Get Fat, Mireille Guiliano's <strike>diet</strike> lifestyle book about eating the French way in order to lose weight and fully enjoy life to its fullest? Being a huge fan of all things European, and a promoter of everything in moderation, I enjoyed reading it tremendously. It's the only food book that Fab has ever laid a finger on, making me think it's fashionable enough to flip through her sequel French Women for All Seasons: A Year of Secrets, Recipes, and Pleasure. This book sits in my to-read stack and I can't wait to return to Guiliano's chic, but know-it-all, mom who whole heartily promotes drinking Champagne as often as possible! The topics of eating locally and cooking with produce that's in season is all the rage right now, and I'm curious to see her French view on the subjects. Has anyone read her second book? Is it worth bumping to the top of my must-read list?

Summer Reading: Cupcakes!

There are loads of books out there dedicated to the lovely cupcake. In fact, it seems like you can barely walk into the cookbook aisle without being bombarded by at least 10 cupcakes smiling back at you (and yes I said smiling, because we all know, cupcakes don't really scowl). And while there are some really fantastic cupcake books to choose from, today I thought I'd tell you about Cupcakes! by Elinor Klivans. Filled with gorgeous photography and perfectly moist and delicious recipes, this book will have you racing to the kitchen to whip up a batch before you can even say paper liner. With easy to follow recipes, the hardest part will be deciding what to bake first! My biggest complaint with the book is that I really wished there was a photograph for each recipe. Some of the techniques seem straightforward, but a picture example would have been great. Also, I should mention that this book has had some mixed customer reviews on Amazon. Seems that a bunch of folks have had problems with the basic chocolate cupcake recipe. However, I've made them several times (as have friends who don't have as much baking experience) and have not experienced that problem. Have any of you tried this book, and if so, have you run into any problems? If you haven't, and you're curious about the recipe, then be sure to check out this one for two-layer Chocolate-Covered Chocolate Cupcakes (with or without mint). I thought they came out wonderfully moist and perfectly sinful. To get the recipe,

Summer Reading: The Cuisines Of Spain

If you read this fabulous little website frequently, you probably know by now that I am a complete and total Spainophile (yes I know that's not a real word, but I couldn't find the Spanish equivalent to the French loving Francophile). After living in Andalucia for two years, what can I say? I love all things Spanish, including the food. I have quite the collection of Spanish cookbooks, however my favorite is The Cuisines Of Spain: Exploring Regional Home Cooking by Teresa Barrenechea. I received this book as a gift from my godfather and have made lots of successful, authentic tasting dishes that take me back to the balmy nights and long, lazy afternoons. The empanada dough is flaky and browns perfectly, the classic patatas bravas tapa is the best recipe I've tried, and the gambas al ajilio is succulent and garlicy.

I especially enjoy this book for its beautiful photography of the Spanish countryside, detailed descriptions of the origins of the recipes, and Barrenechea's personal stories that relate to each dish. If you are interested in learning the secrets of a genuine Spanish mother, I highly recommend this book.

Summer Reading: Julie and Julia

A few years ago, while facing her 30th birthday, Julie Powell decided that even though she had no culinary background, she was going to master Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. So she built herself a blog and gave herself a year to complete every single recipe inside. There were ups and downs, but over the course of 365 days not only does she learns how to make a clafouti, but she learns a lot about herself. While reading the compelling memoir, entitled Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment, you'll have the opportunity to step inside one gal's attempt to change her life.

Personally, I found the journey to be wonderfully heartwarming and a pleasure to read. Powell's prose is witty, provocative and had my stomach growling, my heart aching and my mind enthralled. I'll have to warn you though, if you're looking for a book about French cooking, you're going to have to keep searching. While it is definitely sprinkled with food, the memoir is really a vehicle for what the author was going through during that period in her life. You may not find the secret to unlock your inner Julia Child, but you will find a really entertaining read.
