Jenna Bush's Wedding Cake: Love It or Hate It?

The President's daughter, Jenna Bush, was recently married in a lavish but down-to-earth wedding at her family's ranch in Texas. Few details have been released about the ceremony, reception, and menu but rumor has it the cake was created by the Ultimate Cheesecake Bakery. The tres leches/dulce de leche cake had whipped cream frosting and fresh floral arrangements. By the time this photo was taken, the top tier of the confection had started to fall. While it's sad the top was tilting, it's probably something the happy couple will laugh about for years to come. I'm a huge fan of dulce de leche and can only imagine how delicious the cake must have tasted. Thoughts? Source

First of all, let me start by saying I'm really sorry if you used any of these cake toppers at your wedding. Maybe I just don't get your humor. Secondly, let me add to that by saying these are some truly tacky cake toppers. From mermice — yes mermaid + mice = mermice! — to fighting couples, I think I can guarantee that you won't find these cake toppers on any 2008 trends list.

Once you've decided which cake trend suits your wedding style, it's time to think about the flavor of the cake. Although many couples have differing tastes, you can compromise on a flavor that suits both of you. Each layer can be different, or you can offer a variety of smaller cakes.

Better Know a Group: Cake Decorators Unite!

I was checking out the posts on TeamSugar when I came across this one in the Cake Decorators Unite! group. Group founder ashleyk4214 really stepped up her game and created this gorgeous cake for a wedding this past weekend. It's a French vanilla cake with blueberry filling and vanilla buttercream icing. Not Cheesecakes, Cheese Cakes

I know that wedding week was last week, but I have a feeling that some of you would be interested in this. Instead of having a traditional cake, why not opt for a cheese cake. When you hear someone say this, you immediately think, okay a cheesecake, I like cheesecake, maybe we can even have a nice berry topping. Oh but wait, I am not talking about cheesecake, I am talking about cheese cake. As in cheese, stacked in tiers. The Fine Cheese Co in England (don't worry they ship, although you could always try to replicate it yourself) offers a range of "cakes" suitable for 30 to 300 people - prices vary.

Ann Wood's Adorable Handmade Cake Toppers

Every now and again I will find a product that stops me in my tracks, takes my breath away, or makes me squeal a super-high pitched "I neeeeeeds it!"

Well, these little birdie wedding cake toppers by Ann Wood actually made me do all three. Made from mostly vintage fabrics, trims and laces (including some from old too fragile to wear wedding dresses), these little birds will look absolutely darling on top of your wedding cake. They're handmade, and each set is pretty unique, she even does different variations - the standard bride/groom, as well as bride/bride and groom/groom versions. Each set is absolutely amazing and will look great on just about any wedding cake. However, since they're so unique and personal (she can actually do custom orders incorporating your own fabric and ideas), be prepared to spend a little bit of money on them - the sets start at $240 and top off at $400. But it's your big day and you're worth it, aren't you?

Hostess Wedding Cakes

So you've decided that you don't really want a traditional wedding cake, but you're not so sure about cupcake wedding cakes either. Well how about one made from Hostess creations? That's right, I'm talking about a cake made from Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Ho Hos, Suzy Q's, Sno Balls and more. Last year, Readymade magazine's editor Shosana Berger featured a ding dong cake at her wedding.

However, chef Phil Delaplane took his to the next level and incorporated a ton of different
Hostess creations into his wedding cake.

What In The World is a Groom's Cake?

Now that we've got the wedding cake talk out of the way, I thought we'd talk about groom's cakes - what it is, if you need one, and if so what should you get?

First of all, a groom's cake is just a smaller (and usually whimsical) cake meant to reflect the groom's interests, hobbies, profession, etc. It can be served at the wedding, during the rehearsal dinner, or even at the engagement party (although that's more rare). However it was traditionally meant to be sliced and boxed for unmarried girls to take home and place under their pillows (you know, so they could dream about their groom to be), but we'll have none of that these days. These days we just need a tasty fun cake - although, since the wedding cake is our main wedding night cake treat, we might box it up to take home anyway...

Do you need a groom's cake? Nope. Most people won't even notice it's missing and it's a great place to cut costs. Besides since wedding cakes no longer have to be white and boring, you can let your creativity show there.

Will you want a groom's cake? Possibly, and if money isn't an option, most definitely. It's a fun way to show off the groom's personality (sorry ladies, but you know you made the rest of the wedding decisions) and many people love the way they look. I talked to Susan Morgan of the delectable Elegant Cheese Cakes (who made all the cakes shown here) and this is what she had to say:

"Watch out, [The groom's cake] will steal the show with creativity and flashes. I have heard that at many weddings where we have created the cake and groom's cakes, people will line up their pictures taken with the groom's cakes."

Ultimately it's up to you, but after taking a look at these great cakes, how could you not want one?
