How-To: Make Quick and Easy Apple Votives One of my favorite Fall traditions growing up was picking apples on Columbus Day weekend. After piling into the car, my cousins and I would head up to an orchard nearby and pick more bushels of the fruit than we knew what to do with. Of course, apple pies were the obvious choice, but sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.

How Do You Like Them Apples? Now that the new season is well underway, I'm going nuts here over Fall produce. That, of course, includes my year-round favorite, the apple. You may eat one a day to keep the doctor away, but can you identify the fruit's many varieties?

Come Party With Me: Hoedown — Menu At a barn shindig, serve a hearty meal with plenty of napkins to mop up the finger-licking good eats. Start the meal off with a spicy appetizer in the form of shrimp with barbecue seasonings. Slow-cooked beef brisket is a savory, smoky, and scrumptious entree.

An Apple a Day? We practically cut our milk teeth on the old adage, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." But have you ever wondered if there is any validity to it? Well no fruit can cure all your ills, but the apple seems to be a great piece of produce for preventive medicine.

Happy Hour: Green Grape Sangria When I saw this recipe for white wine sangria in the July issue of Gourmet magazine, I knew I had to make it. I wasn't disappointed when I did; this sangria is phenomenal. It's fresh, fruity, and refreshing without being overly sweet.

'Wich of the Week: Grilled Chicken, Onion, and Apples I have a serious weakness for savory-sweet combos, including sandwiches featuring apples. Since I've been craving baguette sandwiches lately, I decided to indulge my two sandwich fixations at a friend's recent barbecue (hence the paper plates). These sandwiches are as easy as making kabobs, throwing them on the grill, and simply showcasing the ingredients on a fresh baguette.

Come Party With Me: Heroes Season Premiere — Dessert No dessert says TV dinner more than a dish that features warm fruit and cool ice cream. While a pie or cobbler are delicious selections, wow guests at a season premiere party (or any party for that matter!) with this to-die-for apple cake. Complete with toffee crust, fresh apple filling, and rich butterscotch sauce, it's luxurious and comforting — sort of like a glam, grown-up sister to apple pie.

Noteworthy Nibbles — Sept. 16-22, 2008 In the height of good weather, food and festivity abound, and right about now, I'm wishing I could teleport myself around the United States. First I'd hit up Manhattan for Wine 2.0's wine sampling this week, followed by the Shrimp & Grits Festival in Georgia, and then some classic Eli's cheesecake in the Windy City. Don't miss out on these events — if you do, you'll have to wait another year!
