2007's Favorite Food Trend Is . . .

This year saw the rise of food as a fun activity, fancy fro yo, and sweets that are savory. However none of those topped your favorite-food trends the way local food and high-end comfort food did. The lead kept flip-flopping — currently high-end comfort food is winning by two votes — however I'm going to have to go with the local-food movement.

Eating locally is a trend that has been growing over the years and in 2007 it's finally become something the average person has heard of. The Oxford American Dictionary declared locavore word of the year, and even my local Safeway touts produce that's locally grown. It's also a trend that many restaurants have adopted, and I think it's one that will grow in 2008.

So what do you think of the local-food movement? Do you eat locally-grown food when you can? I try to, but admittedly, I can't do it completely. Give up pineapple? I think not!

Yeah. I'm with you Yum. I try to eat local when I can. It helps that Minneapolis has so many co-ops and local farms. We even have a farmer's market (summer, only...boohoo) which is only for local farmers and purveyors. Can't get everything local though...I'd miss bananas too much!

I too and with yo, Yum. I live near Minneapolis as well, and LOVE to shop at the many co-ops. The best has to be the farmer's markets and farm stands that are scattered everywhere from May to October/November. Nothing like meeting those that raise your food! The best was chatting with an older Asian woman about her Thai peppers. With a thick accent she told me "You take home ahn fleeze. You have enough foh hoo ye-ah." I brought them home, I fleezed them, and by gosh I did! Eye-wink

    Punkingirl,

Have you ever had St. Pete's Blue Cheese (Faribault, MN) or Diffley's Gardens of Eagan sweet corn or watermelon? They're all bang-your-head-on-the-kitchen-table NUUUUMMMMMMY!

Yeah, I'm too into tropical fruit to totally go this way, but I do love local produce! I think it's great that at my parent's house, their neighbors have their own stand in town so we're able to get good fresh produce (and cute pumpkins come Halloween!) that are locally grown and be good neighbors at the same time. Plus we get stuff for free dropped off at our house too, lol.
