Outside of the choices available, I would have guessed that the popularity of fruitcake has died out due to the year-round availability of fresh fruits and nuts.

vapidintuition your comment hit the nail on the head!.... I would think we had fresher, far better ingredients these days due to refrigeration etc... Maybe we're just sore losers.....nah, it can't be that!!....lol

I'm not really trying to complain or anything, but question 3 is sort of relies on speculation, and any of the three answers could be correct.
The quality of the ingredients has changed in some fruitcakes, but a person can still make a fruitcake with the best and freshest ingredients, and people will not like it because tastes have changed over the years.
I mean, the whole definition of "Sweets" has changed since then. People don't rely on honey and maple syrup and dried fruit and roasted nuts for flavour anymore. Compare a twinkie to a fruitcake, and I know more people that would take the twinkie and leave the fruitcake.
I'm just sayin.
