Dessert For The Lactose Intolerant: Plum Sorbet

As much as I love a creamy decadent bowl of ice cream, there is a time and a place for sorbet. There is no milk or cream, making it an awesome dessert for those who are lactose intolerant. This tasty alternative is just as cool and twice as fruity. Made with my favorite stone fruit, the juicy ripe red plum (peaches were my fav last week), it has a decadent, deep color. No ice cream maker is necessary for this treat, but you will need a food processor to blitz everything efficiently. Serve alone or sandwiched between 2 cookies for a satisfying finish to a hot day. You'll see the recipe if you read more

Plum Sorbet

4 Tbsp grape juice
2 pounds ripe red plums
4 Tbsp water
6 Tbsp granulated sugar

  1. Cut plums in half and remove pits.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat combine plums, sugar and water. Stir until sugar is melted, then cover and simmer gently for about 5 minutes until plums are soft.
  3. Transfer fruit mixture into a food processor and puree until smooth. Stir in red grape juice and cool completely.
  4. Transfer into a freezer container and freeze until firm.
  5. Spoon frozen fruit mixture into food processor and puree until smooth.
  6. Return to freezer container and freeze once again until solid. Remove from freezer and allow to soften slightly and serve.

Serves 10.

I'm lactose intolerant (although I hardly ever admit it!) and sorbet has always been a great alternative to ice cream and sherbet. My other favorite are the vanilla tofutti cuties they are delicious and plenty of my tofu-hating, milk-loving friends agree.

I have to try this sometime. I'm lactose intolerant however not as bad as some people are. I can eat some ice cream just not too much. My limit would be twice a week otherwise I'm sick. I love sorbet and this recipe sounds great.

I love sorbet, I find it lighter and more refreshing than ice cream. There is a place next to my favorite Chinese restaurant that serves some delicious passion fruit sorbet.

i love the toffuti things geek mentioned. this recipe looks so easy and delicious!i'm vegan, so of course don't eat dairy - this is a nice summery alternative to often too-sweet ice cream.
