Hell's Kitchen - 3.7 Recap

Forgot to set your Tivo to reality television's most fiery food contest? Have no fear, I watched Hell's Kitchen for you! The battle of the sexes was back as the six cheftestants were tested on their resourcefulness and creativity. Challenged first with leftovers, and later with planning their very own menus, both teams ran into plenty of obstacles. Bonnie bitched, Josh failed, Rock complained, and Julia shone (woo-hoo!). Ramsay yelled, kicked garbage cans, and shot (yes with a real gun!) a contestant (or 2). For all the details and more, read more

The teams are given a tray of leftover ingredients that includes white wine, spaghetti, vegetable stock, beef, and chicken. They have 30 minutes to create 3 dishes. At the silver plated showdown, Bonnie and Brad begin. Chef likes the dishes: a rustic tomato, chicken soup and fancy curried bass with crustacean tomato pasta, respectively, and awards both teams 1 point. Jen's steak and eggs are too simple and Josh's chicken legs are bathed in a highly acidic sauce, so neither get a point. It comes down to Julia and Rock. While Ramsay enjoys Julia's fish & chips he finds it disappointing for the level of competition and awards Rock's surf & turf the winning point.

As their reward, the boys are invited to a paintball fight with Ramsay, 3 against 1. The girls have to clean Hell's Kitchen and unload the deliveries. Later the contestants find out that the dinner service will be the most serious because (for the first time) the teams will create their own menus of 3 appetizers, 3 entrees, and 3 desserts. The diners can choose from either the red or the blue menu. After a lot of grumbling no one is really satisfied with the menus. Ramsay questions Julia's contribution and find out that all of her ideas were overruled by Jen and Bonnie. He pulls another dish and substitutes Julia's strip steak and shrimp.

During the dinner course, 52 red and 48 blue menus are ordered with the majority being Julia's steak. The girl's struggle to make Bonnie's bacon wrapped rabbit (bet you can't say that 5 times fast!), bicker, and lose communication and team spirit. Josh brings the boys down with his total inability to cook lamb, but when Ramsay demands that someone help him, neither Rock or Brad go to Josh's aid. In the end, Ramsay praises Julia for her consistency and asks her to select a girl for elimination. The boys are left to nominate amongst themselves. At elimination Julia nominates Bonnie for her failure to execute (and forgetfulness to turn on the stove!) and Brad martyrs himself. Ramsay asks Brad to leave because when looking for a leader, all Brad was was a cook.

You waited all week for it and it's finally here! My top 5 Ramsayism's from last night's show plus 1 extra that we shall entitle, Words of Wisdom To Live By by Gordon Ramsay:

  • You're a professional chef? I expect more from you: The chicken's not cooked all the way through, the sauce is disgusting, yeah? And the dish is just crap.
  • Where's the lamb? How long please? Hey you! Hey donkey one's nicely cooked and one's boiled! Under pressure now and this is where it separates a f**king chef from a donkey! Come here, let me tell you something, let me tell you something in your ear, you can't cook! Thats what's just been confirmed to me! Yah you're coming, so is your f**king elimination!
  • Hey Josh, I wouldn't trust you with a hot dog stand.
  • Jen don't stand there looking all sad like a little lonely puppy.
  • Hey missy turn the f**king gas on... you should be f**king ashamed of yourself!
  • To be successful as an individual, you have to be successful as a team

Now for some rhetorical questions to get you all thinking: How in the hell did Ramsay beat all 3 boys at paintball? What do you think Bonnie thought when she saw her face being used as a target for paintball practice? Were those really leftovers, or was it raw pieces of meat? Did Ramsay call Josh a doughnut?? What's the deal with the steaming pots on stove at elimination?

And finally, a totally unrelated side note: Ramsay's bad boy persona and hot shot chef are starting to get to me...I think I've developed a school girl crush!

The steaming pots really had me laughing last night. And I am pissed Brad went home. It shouldve been Bonnie.

I think that Chef Ramsey should have stepped in and made Josh go home. Just because Brad didn't "take the leadership role" in one service was a bunch of crap. When has Josh ever taken the leadership role? He doesn't do anything but screw up.
Bonnie is pretty annoying too and she could stand to go home.

I think it will come down between Jen and Rock.

I think Josh should have gone home eventhough he wasn't nominated. It should be interesting to see him & Rock together HAHAHA. I am rooting for Julia, she is great!

I am so tired of Josh, he needs to go home. I did feel bad for him when no one helped him as he ruined tons of lamb, but he should have listened to Rock when they started. I am glad Juila is still hanging on but I doubt she will win.

That's so funny, I never noticed the steaming pots before and then last night I'm like WTH?!?

I'm glad Bonnie got to stay but I wish Josh went home. I guess it makes for good drama if Rock and Josh are fighting.

Next week looks so good when Jen and Rock go at it!

I think they screwed up the delivery on purpose to see how careful the players were being.

I also thought Josh should have been packing his bags. I love Julia, I think she's great for the underdog, short order cook. The moment of the evening has to go to Bonnie for not having her gas turned on...what a blonde! Can't wait for next week! Smiling

Ramsay beat all of the boys at paintball because he used to play semi-professional soccer until he destroyed his knee, after which time he discovered he was actually a really good cook. I think this explains all that uncontrollable rage. It's soccer hooligan rage. Also, as we know Yum wrote about, dude hunts and kills his own deer. And Josh, Rock and Brad are all a hell of a lot slower than deer . . .

I'm rooting for Julia, because the other contestants keep dissing her for working at the Waffle House.

Thanks for the summary! I missed it last night!
That's so great for Juila to be praised for her steak dish!
Honestly... how cool would that be if a waffle house cook won the competition?!

The only one I would like to see win is Julia. Her fine dining skills may not be up to what the other contestants are but she has this quality to her that makes me want to see her win. She may not have all the knowledge now but she seems to have the most potential.

Chef Ramsey winning the paintball game was pretty questionable!! I'm thinking it was fixed, I can't believe that not one of them could get a shot on him.

I love this show. Bonnie and Julia are my favorites, but I agree with everyone else that it will be Rock and Jen in the end. Both of them have had pretty whiny moments, though (Rock with the garbage, and Jen when she didn't get her way with the menu) - not exactly mature! Bonnie and Julia have the best attitudes out of anyone.

In the end, it will probably be Rock and Jen with Rock taking the prize. I am extremely disappointed this season; pretty much all of the contestants suck. It seems like they casted completely based on personality this year and ignored actual experience or skill. If it weren't for Ramsay (who is started to sound extremely scripted too), I would stop watching this show altogether.

Julia makes me sad. She's a good cook and a good leader, but she is clearly out of her element. She needs to go to a culinary school and broaden her skills, palate, & knowledge before she'll ever be ready to be a chef at or run a fine dining restaurant.

I think Julia has the best attitude, works well in teams and does what she is supposed to do. I liked Rock in the beginning but his attitude is terrible. He is beyond full of himself and just rude most of the time. I really hope he (or anyone else besides Julia, for that matter) doesn't win.

So i totally missed the steam rising from the pots during elimination - i will have to catch that next time. I am totally pulling for Julia or Bonnie. I can't stand Rock. I liked him at first because he was really confident and was trying to be a team leader. After his attitude with the trash cleanup, he is just an ass. I am glad josh got to stay last night because he managed to get his shizz together after no one came to his rescue. I think though if he doesn't get it right this coming up week he has to go. I think Jen is always pouty and should probably go soon as well. I think Julia should win it all though because everyone is giving her crap because she works at a waffle house and that is just mean. she has consistently pulled things off and has gotten little credit. Bonnie does have a good palate but i just don't know that she can handle the "heat" of the kitchen if she can't manage to turn on the freakin' stove.
