Could You Eat One Hot Dog Every 10.9 Seconds?

Yesterday, at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, reigning champion Takeru Kobayashi was bested by Californian Joey Chestnut. In a down-to-the-wire race, Chestnut dethroned six-time champion Kobayashi by downing 66 hot dogs (plus buns) in 12 minutes - that's one hot dog every 10.9 seconds. Kobayashi, despite recently having a wisdom tooth extracted and treatment for a sore jaw - managed to do his personal best by inhaling 63 hot dogs.

However, the event wasn't without some controversy. At the final few minutes Chestnut was devouring hot dogs so quickly, the counter couldn't keep up and they had to actually go back and count all plates.

If you didn't get to catch it on ESPN, you're in luck. Catch the final few dramatic minutes, just read more

I'm lucky if I can eat 2 a day. 66 in 12 minutes makes my stomach turn a little. Good for him though!

eating contests both disgust and enrage me. They're gross, people are rewarded for eating ridiculous amounts of whatever food w/in the time frame (food that wasn't enjoyed and is often puked back up shortly thereafter). All this while thousands of people (men, women, and children), have NOTHING to eat.

I'm not typically a soap-box, "how can you do X while so many people in the world are suffering from Y" kind of person. But eating contests are disgusting, on so many levels

I think competitive eating is hysterical. I am kind of excited someone finally over threw Kobyayshi.

I think there are a lot worse things to get worked up about. I think people that feel the need to have 15 cars when there are millions of people who dont even have transportation to take themselves to a job or the doctor. Thats just my opinion though.

Ugh! I don't think I could eat more than three in 10 MINUTES without gagging and feeling incredibly ill. I don't even want to think about one ever 10.9 seconds.!

They estimate he consumed over 20,000 calories, 6 CUPS of fat, and about 1/4 cup of salt. At a time when childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic, these contests send the wrong message.

I agree with Blackjade about the waste of food, and particularly meat. I always try to be respectful of critters who gave up their life for our food.

I had two wisdom teeth extracted more than a month ago and I'm still cautious about what I eat because of the hole the teeth left. I would not want to get a garlicy hot dog stuck in my gums.

I don't know how they heck they do this. And HOW do they train?? It's crazy. But I'm a New Yorker, and this is an annual tradition so it doesn't bother me the way it seems to bother some of the other commenters.

My favorite part of the entire contest is when Kobayashi threw up and the announcer goes - "Ohhhh...you hate to see that..." Like he was commenting on a QB getting sacked. Made me LoL all day. But yay for Joey Chestnut!

I don't know...I think turning gluttony into a sport is worth getting worked up about. I think not being able to put food on the table and starving is kind of suckier than not having a car.

This guy ate SIXTY SIX hot dogs. I think it's disgraceful that we have to debate whether or not it's a good idea to leave our garbage out for homeless people to eat, but we don't even think twice about wasting hundreds of potential hot meals in competions like this.

I know it's tradition, and it's fun. But I always thought those were the two worst excuses for keeping up detrimental behaviours.

Nathan's should really be donating the amount eaten to homeless shelters in the area. It would show they had at least SOME sort of conscious.
