Would You Eat Guinea Pig?

I consider myself an adventuresome eater. This means I'll try anything once and don't get squeamish by the sight of pig legs, fish heads, octopus tentacles, or stomach linings. Still, it's happened to the best of us: sometimes the things people eat are just plain gross. The smell is overpowering and inevitably you lose your appetite.

My sister recently traveled to the mountains of Ecuador where guinea pig is a delicacy. A girl after my own heart, she ordered and sampled the rodent stating that there was not a lot of meat and it was mostly crispy skin with a taste similar to chicken skin. How about you? Would you eat guinea pig, or is reading this making you sick?

People eat all kind of animals, I don't really find it strange anymore. I would never eat guinea pig, but then I don't eat meat in the first place, so... Laughing out loud

Gross. Gross. Gross. I respect her choice to try it, and the fact that it's a local delicacy...but gross, gross, gross!

I am not surprised someone somewhere is eating guinea pig, but I do not think I could ever eat something I once owned as a pet.

I would try it, because I'll try most anything. But, I think I'd have a hard time convincing myself to like it. Shocked

No way, look at how the teeth are still on there, it's so sad! I'm with Geek, I respect people to eat what they wish, but it's not for me.

Food is food is food. We Americans are the morons of the world, turning our noses up and looking down on other countries for their dietary choices. While I don't think I'd happily walk down the street munching on a guinea pig or hamster if I was invited to someone's home and they fixed a lovely meal and it happened to be guinea pig and I be polite and sample it. Who knows I might enjoy it. Now would I run back San Francisco and to my local PetCo and stock up on guinea pig? Probably not, I'd probably never cook it myself.

Also to call something a delicacy would indicate that its rarely served save for special occasions and if as someone else said you can see guinea pigs roasting over spits as you walk down any street in Ecuador then its a part of their diet not a special delicacy.

Green eggs and ham y'all...green eggs and ham.

Hell no! Just reading the title gave me the creeps, nevermind looking at the photo.
I would like to think I'm willing to try anything once but, this would be taking it too far for me.

Wow, PartySister, is there a reason why they don't remove the head or claws? Surely you can't eat those teeth anyway and it's easy to remove the head before preparing the animal.

It was sort of a delicacy thing.....I think keeping the body intact was a way to display status?? I don't really know, but I'm glad I tried it--but wouldn't ever ask Partysugar to make it for me!!

No-I could never try this. Just knowing that the head and teeth and ears and all that are still on it would be enough for me to throw up if it was right in front of me.

As a vegetarian, this thoroughly disgusts me and almost offends... but I understand that "to each his own" and I eat tofu, which freaks some people out Smiling

TOOOOTALLY just was watching a travel show about Ecuador and showed the chef guy eatting guinea pig! I had a guinea pig when I was younger, they are SOOOOO adorable. But, considering it is like natural food of the area, i'd be tempted to give it a shot...Even tho I'd want to take a living one home with me! Laughing out loud

I have a guinea pig...and it's practically my child. It has a leash, and a carrying case, and does tricks. Seriously. I'm a vegetarian but I would NEVER ever, consider eating a guinea pig even if I wasn't. Ever.

    I don't think I can do it.

I remember some people where I used to live, eat dogs, yes, some actually resort to kidnapping neighbor's dogs then eat them.

Yikes. Eating your pet just feels so wrong on so many levels.

Cows are cute, too! They have those big brown eyes...and plenty of people have pot bellied pigs as pets. It's either gross to eat a dead animal or it isn't- I don't mean to sound mean, really truly I don't, but it just reeaaaally bugs me when people get all grossed out or offended at eating dogs or guinea pigs, but don't think anything of a chicken nugget or steak.

I agree with you JessBear. All animals are feeling, emotional creatures, and eating one is not more wrong than eating another. Seeing that guinea pig on the plate makes me sick, but so does walking through the meat isle in the grocery store. I'm so glad I'm a veggie girl!!!!

Different cultures, different foods. I'm sure there's American foods that many other cultures find absolutely horrendous.

I, too, consider myself an adventurous eater and will try everything once, but I admit that seeing those pictures makes me a bit squeamish since I've played with friends' pet guinea pigs before. Would I try it? If it were offered to me by a local, sure. But like wackdoodle said, even if I found it tasty, I probably wouldn't bring that recipe back to the US.

Uhm, I never really considered guinea pig a delicacy. I don't know. I am not fond of guinea pigs in general, but I suppose what's the difference between eating a cow and eating a guinea pig?

wackdoodle and talida I couldn't agree more! I mean even in England there's steak and kidney pie, a personal fav., but lots of people in N. Amer are freaked out by it. I'm not going to throw one on my bbq for dinner tonight, but if I were in Ecuador, I would try it.

I just saw Anthony Bourdain's on Peru. He ate it. I wouldn't order it, but if I was someone's guest and they obviously went all out, I would eat it.

I would if I was offered it, but it's not really to my liking because I think of guinea pigs as pets and not food. I'm used to thinking of chickens as food, but not ducks, etc. I think it's definitely a matter of perspective. But I don't think it's weird to eat guinea pig...
