Holy Cannoli Batman! Get us to Costco stat!

Just in time for Cinco De Mayo, cases of authentic Mexican Coca Cola have been spotted at Costco. They're able to sell it since they've conformed to the US and California's regulations, such as labeling the CRV (the recycling deposit) and nutrition facts.

So why is this news? Well it tastes different, it's made from sugar instead of corn syrup, and people even say that the fizz lasts longer due to the glass bottle. The Atlanta based Coca-Cola Co. considers Mexican Coke in America to be a form of "bootlegging."

"We believe that the appeal of Mexican Coke is as much about nostalgia as it is about anything," says Martin. "It's like getting a piece of home in a bottle. You can't deny the fact that it's in a tall glass bottle, something you just can't find in most parts of the United States."

But it's the "same exact product," and Mexican bottlers are buying the ingredients straight from the company, says Martin.

If it's the same product, then tell me why they sell a kosher Coke during Passover that uses sugar, and tastes more like Mexican Coke?

Also, I wonder where the folks at Costco are getting their Mexican Coke from.

"[The non-Coca-Cola distributors are] trespassing on the territory rights of many U.S. bottlers," said Coke spokesman Martin. "Bringing it into the country is not illegal. But what it does do from the Coca-Cola standpoint is it violates contractual rights that we have with our bottlers. And it has potential trademark right infringements as well."

Hrmm... I better get myself to Costco while it's still available!

I think Robin would say something like "Holy caffeinated goodness!" or "Holy plantation!" He was very topical.

I drag this stuff back by the liter bottle in my luggage when visiting any latin american country, also Canada, if you can find it bottles (its better in glass!)

Puerto Rico, Mexico, Aruba, Costa Rica.. all of these places use cane because its cheaper. (The US subsidizes corn prices in the US making it cheaper to use corn syrup)

Most of these places still use glass bottles, too, but you will probably have to pay the vendor for their deposit if you take their precious bottles.

Coke is a weakness of mine - I try to give it up every time I go on a diet, but I love it. I am sure the real stuff would kill me!

Is this Coke Light tastes so much better? We drank it by the gallon when I lived in Rome.

The thing I don't like about Mexican Coke in the glass bottles is the metal taste from the cap. Get the yellow-capped plastic 2l Coke bottles that show up before Passover and get nice, caramelly cane or beet sugar Coke.

Half my wine cellar is full of Passover Coke. Smiling

The soft drinks you get in Mexico, or any other Latin country are way better. They still have a traditional Coke (or Dr Pepper if you prefer) taste for the most part, but they are sweeter, and just taste so much better! We bring back as much as we can like Liembo does when we visit.

I tracked down kosher Coca-Cola and Pepsi last month during passover. Unfortunately it only came in two litre plastic bottles for both companies. Pepsi only had it in regular pepsi. Coke had it in Coke, Diet Coke, regular Sprite. I did a taste test at work. Most of the people could tell a difference but weren't sure which was which. I liked the kosher Coke at first .. while I did not like the kosher Pepsi. I am a Pepsi person however and, bought a lot more of it. After a couple bottles my taste buds must have adjusted because I really began enjoying it. I finished the last two litre bottle yesterday. I just had my first pepsi with high fructose corn syrup a few minutes ago and, it tastes bad - I truly believe the Pepsi with the other sweetener is better. Now, I say "other" because I don't believe it's pure cane sugar - I believe it's sugar beets. Coke might use real can sugar in their formulation in the US for Passover - I'm not sure. Pepsi did not change the ingredients list on the label - but the product was obviously different - and marked with a white cap instead of blue cap. Coke did change the ingredients listed - HFCS was not there, it said "sucrose" instead. The kosher coke bottles were marked with yellow caps as opposed to the normal red caps.
I wish we could get Pepsi with real sugar all the time. I know soda in general is bad for you but, as far as vices go, I'd rather have this one than be a smoker or drug user. I would even pay a little more for the Pepsi with real sugar.

What bothers me - I read an article - it said the only reason bottlers shifted from sugar to HFCS in the late 70's - early 80's was due to lobbyists and political action committees which coerced congress in to passing laws that artificially drove up the price of sugar. All of a sudden CORN became must more economical - therefore the shift. So much for a free capitalist economy. If it were a truly free market Coke and Pepsi would still be using sugar. It's not just soda though - look at EVERYTHING in the supermarket - it ALL has HFCS. Sad.

And as for Coke's assertion that it tastes the same - they're trying to brain wash us. It's insulting really - trying to tell us we don't know the difference. Maybe they're still defensive due to the "Pepsi Challenge" from all those years ago.

If you can find cola with real sugar - buy it - buy a bunch of it - and don't give up on it if you don't like the first couple servings you try. I guarantee, the amount of disgust you'll feel when you switch from sugar BACK to HFCS will be much greater than the shift from HFCS to real sugar.

I had coke while I was in mexico from a bottle and I prefer the kind bottled in the US. There is a very 'plastic' taste to it. Almost like diet coke sweet - but 50 times worse. It is a pass for me.

There's a store by my house in Woodridge, IL that sells this stuff all the time. I've been buying it for years, so this is nothing really new to me. Also, they have glass bottled Pepsi, Crush, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, and some other kinds of pop. If you guys are looking for products like this, go to a small local Mexican store. It supports business, and they got good food.

The real sugar coke is available for passover because to keep kosher you can't have grain or corn cooked for more than a few minutes. HFCS is obviously boiled for extended periods. Also, everyone says they love the glass bottles, however not many americans are aware that those bottles they are drinking from are recycled. They are picked up from trash dumps(usually by children) and are also returned by restaraunts. They are then boiled (sterilized) and re-filled with soda. Just a little something to think about the next time you enjoy that icy coke....................

I can attest to the fact that they taste sooooo much better. On my trip to Mexico this weekend, I had a bottle, right off the street. They have them in ice chests, covered with HUGE blocks of ice. YUMMY and soooo cold. It was perfect for the hothothot day!

I love Mexican coke. Now, if only they would start selling Coke Light. I lived in Italy for a while, and I miss it. It's so much better than Diet Coke. Corn syrup is evil.

TRY ***JONES*** COLA WITH REAL CANE SUGAR!
I tried it again for th e1st time since they removed the aful high frutose corn syrup, diabete, cancer causing ingredient in peopkle and rats/out of the drink.
Let me tell you I am not a big Cola drinker but this is some REALLY
    really great soda.
My husband and I shared one and later on in the day we could not resist having another:)
We cannot stand the BIG soda companys that send the real -sugar based- cola around the world and stick us with the bottom of the barrel hfc laced crap.
You know in other countrys CORN SYRUP and HYDROGENATED OILS AND GENETICALLY MMODIFIED FOODS ARE illegal,RIGHTFULLY SO,
Americans are finally READING LABELS and have started to take action.
Why dosent the FDA do anything about allowing companys to INJECT the PROVEN CANCER CAUSING
    sodium NITRATES in our meets.
Companys wouldnt have gray colored meat if they would feed the animals we eat a regular diet , with out growth hormonesa and pestice ridden grains.
LADYS this is just the beggining, stary emailing companys asking them to provide you with products with out harmful additives,
ask heignz ketchup why in England they get Ketchup with real sugar and we get the cheap, unnatrural , cornsyrup in our bottles,in our resturants.
    Even chick-filet uses Cornsyrup ketchup.
HOWEVER JASONs DELI is GREAT,food is thesame priceas eating at a fst food resturant these days.
also LOOK OUT fo products that say
NATURAL FLAVORS,that is how companys can legally put natrual on thier product without breaking the law.
    ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS -
    MUST BE ALL NATURAL

In everything you eat thier will always be a natrual flavor in it so it is a legal term.
READ YOUR LABELS,SUPPORT COMPANIES that sell REAL FOOD-like my daughter says.
