Gordon Wants to Outlaw Out-of-Season Produce

Should serving non-seasonal food be outlawed? Gordon Ramsay thinks so. He recently spoke to the BBC News and told them his opinion. During the interview he said:

Chefs should be fined if they haven't got ingredients in season on their menu. I don't want to see asparagus on in the middle of December, I don't want to see strawberries from Kenya in the middle of March. I want to see it home grown.

He's so passionate about this, he's actually brought the issue to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

However something tells me that England won't be seeing a ban anytime soon. There's big business in the food import industry, and shouldn't people have the right to choose what they want to eat? Sorry Gordon, but I disagree with you on this one. Also, do you think everything on his restaurants' menus are grown locally? The Guardian says they're not.

This is ridiculous. Why does everyone feel the solution to every problem is to get the government involved? Instead of fining these restaurants, urge your family and friends not to go, or to order only seasonal items when dining there... consumer demand will and can change the menu and the restaurant's stance on locally grown produce. There's no reason to have the government interfere... could you imagine all the red tape?

this isn't very suprising coming from gordon. he's always telling chefs on 'kitchen nightmares' that they need to buy seasonal/local grown stuff. it's all about the freshness that you can highlight - and in the long run save money on. everyone wants something that's unique for an area or a time of year.

I can't say that government regulation is the issue -- but Go Gordon!! Chefs like him need to bring awareness to this. It would solve a lot of environmental issues if people would begin to learn to eat, primarily, seasonally and locally again.

People should learn what's in season at a given time and order those things for themselves. A lot of things taste okay when they're not in season and local. I like zucchini year round.

I don't think we need more government, I think we need more awareness to this issue. Eating locally and organically is important for nutrition and for local communities. I'm glad Gordon is calling attention to this issue, but I don't think fining restaurants is the way to go. I will give it to the man; he is a food genius.

Personally my lazy self loves this idea. I'm really bad at remembering what is in season. I hate that I buy stuff that isn't local & in season. It's so irresponsible. But obviously the easier solution is for me to learn what's in season--or at least do all my fruit & veggie at a local farmers market.

I must say that there is nothing worse than an out of season tomato. It sends shivers up and down my spine! Yuck!
